Tech Post - Cello Recording

Wow, it's been a long time since i've done a tech post. Its tough getting motivated to do tech posts when all you ever do is work. I've been trying to cut back from completely insane hours to only moderately insane hours, I feel much better lately. Right now i'm on a plane at 34,000 feet listening to The Sundays on my ipod with the headphones crammed deep into my ears. The world is so much nicer when i cannot hear anything but music. Anyway, today i'll blog a bit about how i typically record a single cello. Recently i produced New York City indie rockers "Skidmore Fountain". Their song "Break" can be heard on my main page under the LISTEN section and is definitely worth a listen. Break has electric cello mostly, except for the bridge section which is about 6 tracks of acoustic cello all mic'd the way i'm about to document.

Alot of engineers record cello at a distance, usually 4 to 6 feet. I really don't like to do that unless theres a very specific reason to. I like mic'ing cello up close, usually around 14 to 20 inches away placing the mic higher than the bridge kind of pointing between the strings and the F hole. For a slightly brighter more aggressive sound, get even closer to the strings, for a slightly warmer less rosin like sound, back the mic off to 24 to 36 inches away. In modern rock and pop productions (on this album, indie rock usually with full drum kit, guitars, vocals, odd sounds, often bass, etc...) its alot for the cello to compete with sonically so i cant think of "How can i get the ultimate cello sound", i've got to think more about what kind of cello sound can i get that will sound best within this context. Hence, i get the mic fairly close, 14 to 20 inches. My signal chain for this particular recording was a Sony C800G Tube condensor mic into a GML 2032 mic pre with 4 band EQ, then touch it a bit with an Avalon 737 compressor then into Apogee Rosetta 800 convertors directly into Logic (Digi HD system). I did use some EQ on the GML, i think a bit of top end to open it up even a bit more, probably something like +3 dB wide bell @ 7K, and i'm pretty sure i added a touch of bottom as well, a very slight amount around 100Hz, and the cello had a resonant frequency that was kind of bothering me, so i notched a tight frequency out in the lower mids around 400Hz.

The clearest example of this recording can be found on Skidmore Fountain's myspace page www.myspace.com/skidmorefountain Listen to a song called "Lost n Lonely" which has alot of single cello strewn thru the song, all recorded in this way. Also, if you remember the Skidmore Fountain tech blog on recording electric guitar by mic'ing the guitar body during recording, the guitar on this song was recorded like that, so you might want to go back and read that blog before you listen if you care :-)

I've also included two pictures from this recording session to give you a visual idea of where i put the mic.

Linda Chorney Video

Hi everyone,

So, a former client of mine and still good friend just finished a music video to one of her songs and put it up on YouTube, so i thought i'd help her out and post a link. Linda Chorney is a very talented singer / songwriter. A few years ago she had a Top 40 Adult Contemporary hit single. Enjoy her new stuff!

March Madness

Not Basketball! March Madness could describe my life in general right now. Wow, so many cool things happening, where do i begin. The weather is kinda crappy here right now. just cant make up its mind. Yesterday i was doing 125mph flying up the Parkway with the top down on a beautiful sunny afternoon (quite a rush i assure you), today its rain rain and it wont go away. Last week it was 80 degrees one day and snowing like crazy the next. ugh. I get to go to Florida next week for 2 days of very important meetings on some stuff i produced. Send me your good vibes!

Currently, I'm working with Kanye West on a super secret, "I could tell you but then I'd have to ki...." well, you get the idea. All i can tell you is its COMPLETELY different than anything i think anyone would expect, and I'm having a great time working with him on it.

Next. In other "wow some really cool shhhh just happened to another production client of mine" times 2.

Aussie rockers XtortYa just had a song they hired me to produce and mix included in the new "FreeRider MX" DVD. Don't ask me exactly what it is, but it sounds pretty cool. I think its like one of those extreme sports motocross type DVD's, perfect for this music. The song is titled "I Need U" but could be better described as full on rock mixed with loops and various other noises and sounds. Pretty cool stuff and i had a blast producing it. Anyway, The FreeRider MX DVD has a distribution of about 30,000 copies, holy cow thats not bad, and XtortYa's video for "I Need U" is a bonus feature included on the DVD as well. AND... if that wasnt cool enough Suzuki Motorcycles is using "I Need U" for their new promotional campaigns.

I just finished producing and mixing a 6 song EP for NYC indie rockers Man On Earth The Album release party is this weekend when they open for Kill Hanna and Strata in NYC, but even cooler is that their lead off song "Something Better" will be included in the new FMQB CD Sampler, which usually contains all the hottest signed buzz indie rock bands. This time it contains one of the hottest as yet unsigned buzz bands!! I think the record turned out amazing, I'll be posting clips soon. In the mean time, their awesome song "Here We Are" is spinning on their myspace page, check it out!

Plenty of other good projects coming thru, but i cant blog about everything. Currently working on projects from Germany, Canada, Australia, Iceland, United Kingdom, and all over America. And i just landed a great gig working with a heavy modern rock band on In De Goot Records named "Glass Intrepid". Much more on that later. Times are good!

My Mixes Help Land Record Deal

You know, its so rewarding when i hear about things like this. I recently mixed a single called "Dima" for a French Canadian artist named Zaho (www.myspace.com/zaho ...but the song is not posted). I found out today that Zaho landed a worldwide licensing deal with Virgin Records!!!! That is super awesome fantastic news. Big congrats to Zaho and her exceptionally talented producer, Phil Greiss! I'll keep you all posted on further Zaho developments.

In the mean time, i have another French Canadian mix to attend to from super amazing producer Marc Andre Bourbonnais. I mixed an album Marc produced a couple years ago with this French Canadain artist named ELY (that album went on to be a big hit in France), and i was really blown away by the production. He's gotten even better since!

Back to work for me. More deals to seal.

Small Town Sleeper Mastered

I went to the mastering session today for the Small Town Sleeper record i produced and mixed. The album was mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound. In my opinion, George did a great job and I am very happy with the album start to finish, from the songs to the performances to the sonics and production. I was also exceptionally flattered when George said on several occasions throughout the day things like "These mixes really sound great", "Thank you for making my day very easy", "You've all done an excellent job on this record", and "Most of the time records dont come in sounding so good and i have to do alot more". Coming from George Marino, who has mastered everyone from the Rolling Stones, Elvis, John Lennon, Led Zepplin, and Jimi Hendrix to Coldplay, Velvet Revolver, Hinder, Nickelback, and The Dave Matthews Band to only scratch the surface, but you get the idea. It was quite an honor to hear George say those things, and quite a bit of redemption. I'll happily pat myself on the back.

The label (Upper 11 Records) was at mastering as well and was loving everything they heard, another bonus.

Big things are in the works, we'll see where it all goes.

The Eagle Has Landed

The Man On Earth album I'm producing is done!!!! Its 8am Saturday morning, and me and the band and just finishing the last touches on the mixes during an all day all night session. We've spent alot of time together making sure its all exact what we want, and the end result is, well, all i can say is i am very proud of this album. The songs, the performances, the production, the mixes, everything the band brought to the table, everything me and my crew contributed was top notch. The album gets mastered Wednesday, and will hopefully be available for release very soon.

Skidmore Fountain got mastered a couple weeks ago (I produced 7 of the 11 songs on the album), and i just got a copy of the finished album this week. The artwork looks awesome, and I'm very proud of it top to bottom. The band really brought some great performances, and several pre production session in the rehearsal room really helped to shape the course if this album, plus a month of heavy recording, mixing, and production and now its in my hands. Very rewarding.

Small Town Sleeper's album that i produced gets mastered on Tuesday! I can hardly wait to hear the final album, mastered and sequenced. I'll post some clips of all three projects as soon as i can. Actually Skidmore Fountain is already up on my main page. Happy listening!

Sleepy time now.
