Sullee Day 2
4:45am and I just finished vocal production on another Sullee song. Right now Sullee and I are just listening to some of our favorite songs (Killers - "Mr Brightside" is crankin right now), we're just trying to shake off the last song. Really serious song called "Movin On" that Claudette from City High also sings (Beautifully) on. Claudette has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, this song could definitely be a single, and Sullee wrote three great verses and Claudette takes the hooks and bridge.
4:51 and we're vibin to a few new beats that my production partner and I have in the lab. Sullee finished vocals at 4:30am, walks out of the vocal booth and says "you got any beats to write to? I dont wanna finish the session yet". Artists with this kind of drive and work ethic are a producer's dream to work with. So, i put several beats on a CD for him to pick from and he's writing rhymes as I'm blogging about it. Sounding hot so far. Dont know if we'll put anything down tonight, but one thing is for sure, neither of us are even tired right now. Usually by 5am I'm getting pretty burned out, and I'm running on very little sleep right now, but i'm pretty certain i'll be watching the sun rise this morning. Thats fine with me.
Good morning

Hi Ken,
I was wondering that what do you think about such thing that when you have a bunch of work and tight schedules and very tired and stuff like that, How do you manage to keep the quality of work always on the highest level? I mean do you ever catch yourself saying, "man, I should've done better job but I didn't have the time to do that properly"?
thanks!
Well, I am to the point in my career where people are generally willing to wait for me, and they would much prefer to get my work a day or two late as opposed to me trying to rush through it. So, i really try never to do anything less than my absolute best work, and i always work on a flat fee basis, so my clients are not looking at the clock wondering how much more its going to cost them. The flat fee covers them, and it covers me, i dont have clients rushing me to finish so they can save a few bucks, and I have the luxury of spending as long as i want on whatever i do. I get asked all the time if i'll mix on an hourly basis and charge less, the answer is always no. I dont want clients who's #1 concern is not how well the project comes out. There are plenty of people out there willing to hack thru a mix, I'm not one of them. I dont think any mixer is great 100% of the time, but i conciously try to be, and sometimes that means my clients wait a little longer. They dont seem to mind.
